CDM is CDM

Today, at last, we can announce an evolution that’s been a long time coming. CDM is one site, with one name. And we return at last to both music and motion coverage – all in one place.

Call for participants: a Hacklab to change perspectives, in Belgium

In the past weeks, I’ve had the good fortune to talk to astronauts and aeronautical engineers, to artists in residence in space centers (with ESA) and aboard “vomet comet” airplane microgravity experiments (in Russia). A common theme has emerged. Just as images from space once transformed our perception, the next frontier is sound. From spatial sound to works responding to spaceflight, drones, and aeronautics, there’s a chance to change the way we hear and imagine. And so, after we start February at Berlin’s CTM Festival imagining future rituals, we’ll move later in the month to Leuven, Belgium to explore the heard place. You’re …

Welcome to a new CDM.

CDM quietly turned eleven years old this year (after humble beginnings). But it’s not where we’ve been I want to share – it’s where we’re going. And that begins with a new site design and server infrastructure. You’ve been absolutely extraordinary in your support as readers and, more than that, a community, as we’ve grown over the years. But that means building a new platform so we can explore new places.

CDM is on Instagram – And Finding Strange and Cool Stuff at Musikmesse

Leave the selfie sticks to others – welcome to Music Nerd Instagram. Social media can be a real chore at times, but Instagram for me is a bright spot. Following the right people and tags, it’s a place where you can actually find useful and inspiring stuff, and a visual record of where you’ve been, a form of external memory. I’ve been using it as such on a personal account, but it was high past time to give CDM its own home. Follow us – and feel free to tag us, as we’ll be reposting the best images from around …

Watch this Space, Because Something's Coming

What if there wasn’t the arbitrary division between music and motion, sound and image, because so often the focus of this site has been finding the connection? What if Create Digital Motion were rebooted to make it fit 2014, and what happens next? What if we looked at how to make the site stand out amidst a new online landscape in creative technology? What if there were just one CDM? And then what if we made it better? That’s the plan. Stay tuned. Sorry for the delay, but sometimes you have to hit pause to go forward.

Happy New Year, everyone. We’re taking the day off, but while we’re putting together a year-end review of musical technology and invention, any nominees for stories that fell under the radar, that people might have missed? DIY projects, unique tools, or anything of the sort welcome; we do appreciate your ideas, as always. Let us know in comments, and we’ll pick out some of our favorites. Have a lovely evening – Happy rockin’ New Year’s, and to Germany, Guten Rutsch!

We Want to Know How You Read; Days Left Until Google Reader Shutdown

Reading matters for musicians. It’s a source of essential information about tools and artists, inspiration and knowledge. It’s how a lot of us find music and the ways we make music. Your feedback in eight and a half years of CDM has told us that. So, with Google Reader shutting down, maybe it’s a good time to reflect on how you read. Google Reader shuts down forever on the first of July. If you read CDM (and other sites) through Google Reader, or any application that relies on syncing with its feeds, you need to find a new way of …

Get Notes From Our Editor By Email: CDM Mailing List

Kaizen is the Japanese technique of continuous improvement, and that’s what we’re trying to live by daily on CDM, especially this summer, in ways you should start to notice soon. One thing readers have requested for some time is a mailing list. Now, these things are typically promotional tools I myself despise, which could explain why I’ve chronically put it off. But instead, we decided to do things a bit differently. CDM Notes is built like an email, so we can share with you – every week to every two weeks – updates that we hope you won’t miss. It …

Follow Us on Facebook, Twitter for Live Gear Reports from NAMM Floor

We’ll be roaming the floors of NAMM today and tomorrow. As we check out new gear, snap photos and media, and have a look around, you can follow more detailed updates if you’d like more information.
