Hack Biology, Body, and Music: Open Call for MusicMakers Hacklab

For the past two winters, CDM has joined with Berlin’s CTM Festival to invite musical participants to grow beyond themselves. Working in freshly-composed collaborations, they’ve built new performances in a matter of days, then presented them to the world – as of last year, in a public, live show. This year, they will work even more deeply inside themselves, finding the interfaces between body and music, biology and sound. And that means we’re inviting everyone from choreographers to neuroscientists to apply, as much as musicians and code makers. Playing with the CTM theme of “Un Tune,” the project will this …

Watch: Pairing Innovative Live Visuals with Music, Pittsburgh's VIA Festival Couples Off Artists

You’ll know live visualism has arrived when visualists regularly “headline” the way music does. But if you’re tired of waiting, look no further than Western Pennsylvania, where Pittsburgh’s spectacular Via Festival this week is doing it right. See what they’re doing for a great example of what’s possible when visualists and musicians meet — and, since the vast majority of you likely can’t make it to Pittsburgh this week, we’ve put together some videos from the VIA folks to give you a cross section of this work. We’ve covered Abstract Birds/Quayola’s retina-tingling visuals here before, from Montréal’s Elektra Festival. Now, …

Decibel Log 2: Robert Henke, Room40 Label, Flying Lotus and Friends

The FlyLoTrio After Rocking Decibel – Ronald Bruner Jr., Flying Lotus and Thundercat The patter of rain against the window brings in day two at Decibel.  Early afternoon coffee is the ‘tall’ to order for the conference sessions in Pravda studios.  Robert Henke (Monolake) greets with a smile as he takes the podium for the first lecture “The Age of Abundance.”  It is a rare opportunity inside one of the minds behind Ableton, as he thinks on the future of electronic music eleven years after the founding of the company.  His talk revolves around the evolution of computer technology to …

Global VJ Nation: Next Live Performers Meeting will be in Mexico

Ed.: The global visualist community is more underground than people outside the scene may realize. LPM is an essential event in which these artists come together. Events have tended to be in Europe, but now it’s North America’s turn — the other “United States,” the Estados Unidos Mexicanos. Live Performers Meeting won’t be making their sixth edition in Rome as before, nor even Europe, but rather Xalapa, Mexico. LPM came out of the flxer community, a network of vjs using the flxer flash vj software and sharing content through its online system, and now the Mexican contingent have stepped up …

Event Report: Live Performers Meeting, Roma 2008

The fifth edition of LPM brought 240 visualists from around Europe to the edgy splendour of Rome’s Mattatoio di Testaccio for a four day program incorporating 60 a/v performances and 60 vj sets. With a peer-to-peer philosophy and an open-submissions program, it was really encouraging not only to see practitioners in the field get to meet and exchange over the four days, but to see such a high quantity of considered audio-visual works, and an impressive quality overall. Todd Thille reports, with some extra reportage by me. Walking into the 900sq.m of the elegant Macello IV hall, the festival instantly …

µ:avit, 24th May -> Visual Berlin host a day conference

Visual Berlin have just announced their “µ:avit”, a one-day vj meet amongst their ongoing shenanigans at the DMY design fair. Expect a community-led, do-it-yourself feel and a day full of faces-to-names and interesting works. I’ll be there running a full-day Quartz Composer workshop, and the action is sure to run till late via club gigs and suchlike. VB’s form is good: their last big organising effort, “AViT>C23”, went down really well – check the photo gallery and the archived site has a list of people’s reports. There is a press release here, and the website is fresh online at http://dmy.avit.info. So …

Byte Me: Open Jamming for Visualists at Plug and Play, Perth

Plug N Play – ByteMe Festival – Perth from Create Digital Media on Vimeo. Being in Perth, Australia with some of our favorite VJs/visualists was a real inspiration. We’re still processing some of that inspiration — and, literally, all the footage and words we captured while there. One highlight was undoubtedly the Byte Me Festival’s Plug and Play night Thursday. Plug and Play is a regular event in what is supposedly the world’s most isolated city, an open jam for visuals. It reminded me of the open video mixers we’ve had in New York at Share and formerly at Eyewash, …
