Our friends at Bedroom Producers Blog have a free “dirty” filter to share with you today – and odds are it will run in your DAW of choice.
Here’s a look:
VST2, VST3, AU, AAX, macOS, Windows, all the flavors. Even both 32-bit and 64-bit.
I’ll be honest, I’m a sucker for free stuff not only because it’s free, but often because it’s simple. There’s something really elegant about just having a filter that covers the basics like this – and really all the basics – without fancy bells and whistles.
So you get high pass, low pass – both knobs, so you can use both simultaneously – plus a drive feature that simulates tube distortion and a choice of four different slopes, plus a mix control and gain.
I mean, that’s kind of exactly what you need 95% of the time, even though there are plenty of crazy filter plug-ins with extra models and visualizations and whatnot. So, will I grab this and use it? Probably.
Here goes:
- High-pass filter (20 Hz – 20 kHz);
- Low-pass filter (20 Hz – 20 kHz);
- Adjustable slope (12, 24, 36, or 48 dB/octave);
- Tube distortion;
- Mix (0 – 100%);
- Output volume (±12 dB).
“Bedroom” producer is what 90% of the world’s producers are now, so wear that badge with pride! (Hey, I enjoy lying horizontally and sleeping now and then, perhaps despite my reputation from this site.)
BPB has a selection of free DAWs to go with it, though I’m a little miffed they leave out Ardour (for one). Bottom line – free as in beer or free as in freedom will still get you plenty of music tools.
