555 KUBIK | facade projection | from urbanscreen on Vimeo.
Perhaps it means nothing for the practical art of architecture, but clever projection on buildings is making our Neo-Baroque (or perhaps Neo-Roccoco) age even more in touch with illusion and manipulations of scale. This brilliant pre-rendered work adds to the work we’ve been following here on CDM recently. Creative Applications writes:
555 KubiK is a project by UrbanScreen with art direction by Daniel Rossa, 3d design by Daniel Starmann and sound design by Jonas Wiese. The project was realised with MXWendler mediaserver used for mapping multiple projections. Visuals were made using 3D Studio Max.
The conception of this project consistently derives from its underlying architecture – the theoretic conception and visual pattern of the Hamburg Kunsthalle. The Basic idea of narration was to dissolve and break through the strict architecture of O. M. Ungers “Galerie der Gegenwart”. Resultant permeabilty of the solid facade uncovers different interpretations of conception, geometry and aesthetics expressed through graphics and movement. A situation of reflexivity evolves – describing the constitution and spacious perception of this location by means of the building itself.
So, why do we keep running this material on CDM? It’s a reminder that part of the beauty of projection is that it can exist in virtual space. Projection by its very definition is illusion — the illusion of form, of space, of motion (even as you look at a flickering image). The variety of architectural projection is really dependent only on the variety of architectural design – and different dimensions of illusion could take even the same building in radically different directions. (It’d be lovely to see an evening of architectural projections on the same building by different artists, competing for creative ideas.)
