This week, the eyes of the music world will look at what’s new in toys. But how about looking further, to how technology is used? Going deeper to what’s happening in live music and music making is the essence of our new series Practice Space.
CDM is excited to host a living-room style gathering of musicians and performance artists in the heart of downtown LA, and we hope you’ll join us – in person and online.

NAMM has always been an amazing gathering of music technologists, but it can feel as though it occurs in a vacuum – the hermetic convention center world of booths and recycled air. So, since we’re traveling to sunny southern California, we wanted to connect with the scene in LA. It’s a place where people are pushing the technology of musical performance and live shows to their very edge.
That meant getting out of Anaheim, to a central venue downtown, across from the Ace Hotel and Acne Studios. The place:

Kid606, the IDM and experimental legend, is playing live for us. Laura Escudé, who has worked with the likes of Herbie Hancock, brings her electronically-augmented violin.
And conversations look not just to the basics of DJing or music, but to the possibilities of live design in a way that’s only possible in LA. There’s Zak Norman, who did visuals for Squarepusher, RYAT and WIFE working with dance, illusion, and immersion, plus a chat about the direction of DJing and live performance with Carmen Rizzo (unique as both a Grammy-nominated producer, composer, and DJ, and in his connections to the best DJs and artists in the world), and instrumental inventor Henry Strange.
There’s a packed calendar as always that weekend – I’m already plotting how to hop into a taxi to catch still more music that night – but will be a great way to start and worth the trip into LA.
