Why work in modular? One good answer: modulation. And modules are increasingly departing from more utilitarian approaches to gesture recording, morphing, and other expressive concepts. Neutral Labs Pip does all that and has some clever ideas for how two LFOs can work together. It’s available pre-assembled or with source code & DIY builds for those who want it.

This is a double-double your enjoyment situation (see below). There are other modules that stick two LFOs behind a single faceplate, but Neutral Labs has thought through how to make those two pair in creative ways:

  • Preset waveforms with morphing
  • Phase shifting between LFOs
  • Predefined or arbitrary ratios
  • Tap tempo
  • External sync input
  • Record, morph, and time-stretch knob movements or
  • Record, morph, and time-stretch external CV

That last one really gets me – it’s nice enough having a module that treats modulation as gesture recording, but even better to capture external voltages for the same purpose. (I’m already pleased with using Intellijel’s Planar2 and Dnipro’s KRAIT for recording purposes but – hey, more might morphing gesture recording is always welcome!)

Watch through the video and on patch #5, you get automation recording – the lovely Omri Cohen contributes these:

See? Digital turns out to be a nice thing after all. I mean, 18 years after I kind of included it in the title of the site, that’s something of a relief.

vanilla, utilitarian affairs to gesture-recording morphing wonders like this just-released module from Neutral Labs.

That’s already reason enough to be intrigued, but there’s also source code available and the chance to build one yourself if you prefer. (You can also buy it assembled or as a kit from many of the usual suspects worldwide.)

Okay, I should probably not keep referencing American ads for an international audience, especially those that aired before some of said audience was born, but – here you go! You know… two LFOs!

I mean, your AI bot isn’t going to randomly start singing 80s jingles or veer into trivia about the architecture of the Wrigley’s Building in Chicago. Advantage: me, says me.
