As a firm believer in technosolutionism, I am here to tell you, authoritatively, that you need a disembodied glowing hand that creeps around your house and plays spooky music. Not want. Need. Those who do not buy this disembodied hand will surely be left behind, or at least it will crawl after you. Instrument builder and inventor Gijs Gieskes is back at it again.

This is a tech site, so here are some crucial tech specs:

  • Hand module for Eurorack
  • “Plays Halloween song and can walk.”
  • “Also handy for cable storage and possibly other things.”

Gijs also recommends you listen to this through a delay, though isn’t that true of all things? Wait, hold on. Other things? What other things? Actually — let’s just focus on the cable storage.

Sorry, more specs:

  • Gate input (toggles hand on/off)
  • Audio output (8v, peak to peak)
  • +12v 0. / -12v 0. power
  • Runs on 3x AAA batteries

Videos on the site.

HAND: THE EURORACK MODULE YOU CAN TAKE FOR A WALK

I think there’s an important lesson here. The quote attributed to Henry Ford is probably apocryphal — “If I asked my customers what they wanted, they’d ask for a faster horse.” (Henry Ford never said that. Henry Ford is really not someone we should be idolizing generally. And I come from Kentucky, so, like, breeding faster horses is our whole thing.) But indeed, the underlying aphorism has some truth. I was just looking at my Eurorack rig this week, and — this is true — thinking about how I need to invest in a cable hanger. But would I have had the foresight and vision to imagine that cable hanger would transport itself around the studio under its own power, driven by an unseen will, as if my some sorcery? I would not. So we need the leadership and bold imagination of Gijs. It’s like his hand is reaching out to all of us, then crawling … under the table. I’ve lost my train of thought. Also, what is climbing up the back of my neck?

Happy Halloween week, everyone.
