Soundtoys is here with the 5.5 upgrade of their flagship suite, plus a free update for everyone with resizable UIs. Here’s a breakdown of what’s new, what’s free, what’s paid, and more. And there’s a sale on, too.

What’s new, what’s what

Free for all Soundtoys 5 users: resizable user interfaces! Just before you went permanently cross-eyed on high-density displays, it’s fixed! And this is a free upgrade for anyone with individual V5 effects; just update each plug-in via installers in your user account. The slight annoyance is that if you don’t buy the V5.5 upgrade, you will have to install each of those separately. Details.

SpaceBlender 5.5.2 free update. The newest of Soundtoys’ effects was already great, but gets an important update that reduces CPU usage. That’s on top of an important 5.5.1 update with a bunch of fixes (including offline rendering). These updates are also free.

V5.5 Soundtoys Bundle — paid upgrade. This is the flagship update, and as Soundtoys does periodically, it’s a paid upgrade rather than a free one. Here’s what’s included.

Updates from V5.4:

  • Adds SpaceBlender (in case you didn’t catch the free launch offer — though if you did, they’ll adjust your upgrade price so it’s less! If you missed what SpaceBlender is, see my article below.)
  • SpaceBlender integration with Effect Rack.
  • 67 new Effect Rack presets also incorporating SpaceBlender.
  • Single installer with the updates, and a single consolidated license.

The new integrations cover Effect Rack, too, if you don’t need the individual versions of everything. You do need to buy SuperPlate and SpaceBlender separately:

SuperPlate and SpaceBlender can be added to your Effect Rack. You’ll see these plug-ins in the Rack and hear them in certain presets, but their parameters cannot be changed unless you purchase a SuperPlate license and a SpaceBlender license and add them to your Effect Rack plug-in. SuperPlate and SpaceBlender are NOT included with your Effect Rack plug-in purchase.

If you’re not so interested in Effect Rack, of course, that may mean you sit this out and just grab the free updates, which should still make you happy.

V5.3 users have more reason to update, because in addition to the above, you’ll get SuperPlate and its integration with Effect Rack in addition to the new SpaceBlender. (And unlike SpaceBlender, SuperPlate was never a freebie — only its baby sibling LittlePlate.)

But remember that anyone with a Soundtoys software license qualifies for upgrade pricing, including free software. That means if all you ever did was grab one of Soundtoys’ limited-time freebies I regularly cover, you also have access to the upgrade pricing to the full Soundtoys suite.

And I know from reader feedback (a lot of it) that you prefer this to certain plug-in makers spamming your email with random sales every single day. (I say it out of love. You know who you are.)

My article on SpaceBlender breaks down how it works and how to use it — and this is one where you do want that:

I did a similar feature-by-feature, knob-by-knob look at SuperPlate. I, uh, routinely refer back to these stories myself when I forget!

Regarding user interfaces finally being resizable, it’s now, as always, that I quote Luke 15, the Parable of the Overdue Feature Addition. Sorry, Parable of the Prodigal Son. “It is meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy plugin UI was making me squinty, and is alive again; and all the little knob labels were lost, and are found!” Amin!
