Italy’s Faselunare have done lots of great stuff over the years, and they’re entering the final hours of crowdfunding for Cosmolab, a powerful modular DSP kit powered by Electrosmith’s Daisy Seed. Let’s have a quick look.

There are a number of these ideas, and with good reason — choice is at the heart of why we choose open source tools and DIY. But part of what sets the Cosmolab apart is the use of modular boards, so you can quickly get at what you need.

  • Core DSP Board — Houses the Daisy Seed and handles all audio processing.
  • Audio I/O Board — Provides stereo inputs/outputs and headphone monitoring.
  • MIDI Board — Full MIDI DIN I/O for integration with keyboards, controllers, and DAWs.
  • CV/Gate Board — Four CV inputs, two CV outputs, and gate connections for modular synthesis integration.
  • Display Board — OLED screen for real-time feedback and UI.
  • Potentiometer Board — Eight illuminated rotary controls with LEDs.
  • Two Keyboard Boards — One linear and one chromatic button array for sequencers, instrument prototyping, and hands-on control.

You can work in any environment you like — Pure Data, plugdata, Max and gen~, C++, Faust, and Rust. Yes, you can work with AI-assist tools like Cursor, Claude, and Gemini CLI. (I mean those environments generally will work with any open SDK.) But you also get Arduino IDE compatibility, so it’s friendly to people with that background.

This is all fully funded, so at this point, I’m here to alert you to your last chance to get in on the early-bird specials. They’re doing the full kit only — so that is a bit spendy, 500-600 EUR or so depending on the variant.

But I like that they kept this first round small-batch, set a reasonable goal, and just met that. You can get in on that limited first run in the final hours if this looks like it’s for you.

I’m also curious what you think about this as different folks play around with their own takes on this concept.

And they’ve done a nice longer promo video in collaboration with Floyd Steinberg:
