The creator of SoundScaper and FieldScaper is back with another deep and esoteric instrument – and this might be one of the most immediate (and glitchy) yet. GlitchScaper combines six sound generators, a two-layer cycle sequencer, and rhythmic and glitching magic.

This is no less sophisticated than developer Igor Vasiliev’s other creations, but you could say it’s intuitive in a way wonderful tools like FieldScaper just … weren’t. That’s all due to this tool’s architecture, which is dare I say even a bit influenced by some great Buchla-style patching:

  • Each tone generator has 12 complex waveforms / various noise types or uses an external input
  • Generators have parameters for sequences and tones
  • Effects modulated by envelope generators, added per step (now we’re getting glitchy)
  • Spatial effects, master reverb, so you can get ambient, too, if you like

The approach to sequence is also appealing:

To quickly find new ideas, each generator has separate options for making sequences and tones. The parameters of the new sequences and tones are set randomly, but are guided by several user-defined options, which in outline define the steps of the sequence and the type of tone or noise. This allows you make a quick draft of a pattern and then simply tweak it to get the final sound. The advanced copy function gives you ability to quickly make a new preset by copying sequences and tones from existing ones.

You can run this as an AUv3 / Universal App on both iOS and macOS. US$15.99.

And don’t let the “glitch” mention make you think the range is limited here, musically. As the developer writes:

GlitchScaper is great for creating simple beats with an interesting and unusual sound, but it was originally designed for digital distorted patterns with longer steps that blend perfectly with the rhythms of classic drum machines and sequencers.
